THE MARKET

(Since this was composed, more westerns have been made and have
found success such as
“A Gunfighters Pledge” starring Luke Perry
and
“The Man Who Came Back” with Billy Zane.)

Westerns – they truly are an undying breed

The old west represents a time when a code of honor was prevalent, good triumphed over evil
and fading moral values of today existed on a high scale. The market for westerns has been an
undying one as has been witnessed repeatedly throughout the decades. It is evident in the
popularity of movies starring such greats as William S. Hart, Tom Mix and Tex Ritter, and on
through to the ever well respected John Wayne and Jimmy Stewart, down through the present
time. A new generation was introduced to cowboy heroes by such personalities as Clint
Eastwood, Tom Selleck and Sam Elliott drawing in a new audience to this form of entertainment
as well as re-captivating the imagination of generations past. It is a genre that helps connect a
time gone by to the present time - a quieter, simpler time, yet one of many, great challenges.

The 1930's brought us "Stagecoach" and "Tombstone Canyon"; the 1940's unveiled movies
such as "Red River," "The Ox Bow Incident," "Jesse James" and "My Darling, Clementine." The
popularity of the western carried us through the 1950's with "Rio Bravo," "Winchester '73,"
"The Searchers," "Shane" and "High Noon," the latter taking four Academy Awards. In the
1960's westerns were a dominant source on both TV and the big screen.  We saw the
emergence of such films as "True Grit," "The Magnificent Seven," "The Man Who Shot Liberty
Valance," "The Wild Bunch" and "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid."  The 1970's lit up the
screen with such films as "The Outlaw Josey Wales," "Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid,"  "The
Shootist," and "The Cowboys."  The 1980's and 1990's brought popular attention to the genre
again with blockbusters such as "Silverado," "Tombstone," "The Long Riders," and the two
Academy Award winners: "Dances with Wolves" and "Unforgiven." Westerns continued into
the 2000's with films such as "All The Pretty Horses," "American Outlaws," and "Open Range,"
and currently a new movie is being with Brad Pitt playing Jesse James, and a TV mini series by
Robert Duvall for 2006.

The viewing audience affirmed the acceptance of this genre on the small screen as well as the
large with such well received shows as "Bret Maverick," "The High Chaparral," "The Virginian,"
"Rawhide," "Laramie," ""Wanted: Dead or Alive," "How the West Was Won," "Alias Smith and
Jones," "The Young Riders," "The Cowboys," "The Magnificent Seven," "Guns of Paradise,"
"Dead Man's Gun," "Lazarus Man," "The Adventures of Brisco County Jr.," "The Marshall
Chronicles," "Legend" and "Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman," most of them running for a number
of years.  Most recently, HBO put a new spin on the TV western and brought us the highly
successful "Deadwood."  Recent TV movies have also proved to be successful: "Crossfire
Trail" and "Monte Walsh" for TNT received some of the highest cable shares ever, and movies
like "Johnson County War" and "Hard Ground" for the Hallmark Channel. Cable packages such
as "Starz Encore" carry their own Western Channel. Early westerns such as "Bonanza,"
"Gunsmoke," "The Big Valley" and "The Rifleman" still air on a regular basis.  The need for
western heroes has been evident with characters such as Hoppalong Cassidy, The Lone
Ranger, Roy Rogers and Dale Evans, Gene Autry and Davy Crocket. It is a time that lives on in
the hearts of many and will continue to do so for many generations to come.
